John Locke’s principles of liberty, equality, and power worked up until the Civil War, at which point race became a factor, and their relationships were reorganized. Lockean ideals inspired the Declaration of Independence, were a basis for the Constitution, and were consistent up until the Civil War. At the time of the Civil War the question of slavery and the rights of African Americans changed the perception of liberty and equality and shifted power between the North and the South. In 1689 John Locke described the State of Nature, the State of Equality, and the State of Liberty, all of which formed the core of his book, The Second Treatise of Government. He claimed that all men were born into a State of Nature which could be described as “a state of perfect freedom to order their actions and dispose of their possessions and persons as they think fit, within the bounds of the law of nature, without asking leave, or depending upon the will of any other man (Locke, pg. 2).” Within this natural state, Locke observed, there existed a “State of Equality, wherein all the power ......
