Over the past few years, with the success of a player like David Ortiz of the Boston Red Sox, the issue over the designated hitter has been brought front and center. Ortiz has had three very successful seasons in a row, even competing for the American League Most Valuable Player in the past two seasons. However, some people say that since he only hits and does not play defense he is not deserving of such an award. While others say his contributions to his team stretch far beyond the field of play. The argument may go on for as long as baseball is around. In order to have any perspective on the issue of the designated hitter one must understand the history of the DH.
