World Literature I October 25, 2006 The Character of Achilles in the "ILIAD" The main character in the story of the "Iliad," written by Homer, is a young man, half man-half God, named Achilles. Achilles is the Prince of Pthia and leader of the Myrmidons. He is the son of Peleus, who is the current King of the Myrmidons, and his mother is Thetis, who is a sea goddess. As an infant, Achilles, was dipped by Thetis in the Styx, which made all parts of him resistant to attack except for the heels, which is where his mother had held him while dipping him. Achilles' dominant character pervades throughout the story as someone who is very angry. Achilles rage is a constant theme throughout the Iliad as suggested by the first word of the epic. His intense emotions shape every facet of his character. He has the ability to be brutal and arrogant at times, while being sensitive and caring at other times.
