For more than 300 years European countries had traversed Africa but little action was taken to secure areas in this continent and claim them as colonies. Yet, the dramatic and short time of the last 2 decades of the nineteen century saw European powers expand out from the few strongholds they had along the African coastlines and divide the vast mass of the continent between them. The causes of this 'scramble for Africa' are numerous and have, and continue to, puzzle historians. However, I believe that the main factor behind the partition of Africa is economic reasons.
Surplus capital played a pivotal role in causing New Imperialism. European economy and society underwent a profound transformation during the nineteenth century in the form of the Industrial Revolution which led to a tremendous increase in production and productivity.
