The sinister side, published in 1998 is a factual book, written to portray Birmingham in the late 1800s and early 1900s, and to interest readers with the crime, murders and violence in Birmingham. The horror story, The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson, written in 1886, is a fictional Victorian Gothic Novel. These novels were written to shock and interest readers. The Victorians were seen as very respectable with a strict social etiquette, but the stories show that when this is taken away, the evil, dark side of a person is seen. The story is about the scientist Dr. Jekyll and his alter-ego Hyde, whom he creates through experiments in his laboratory. As the story progresses, Jekyll finds difficulty in controlling Hyde, and at the end, Hyde takes over Jekyll completely. This link between Jekyll and Hyde is unexplained until the end of the book.
