A model for Argumentative Writing: Letter from a Birmingham Jail Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Martin Luther King’s, “Letter from a Birmingham Jail”, was a response to “A Call of Unity” written by eight clergymen denouncing his actions of protest in Alabama. The religious leaders argue his engagement in the civil-disobedient demonstration was “untimely and unwise”. King’s rebuttal is a model of argumentation because it draws on his patience and deliberateness to respond through a concise and rational manner. He calculatedly reasons every point in the clergymen’s letter appealing to their logic, appealing to their emotions and appealing to authority. The letter’s rhetoric derives from King’s religious conviction and tradition of the Bible, the Apostle Paul to be specific. He answers his criticism in this letter in four basic steps: provocation, timing, justice, and defiance. King begins his letter enlightening his audience as to why his involvement was provoked. He justifies his presence as an “outsider”, being invited by the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, to plan and coordinate a nonviolent direct action to protest injustice.
