Humans are Inherently Evil The major theme in The Lord of the Flies by William Golding is that all humans are coherently evil. This theme is illustrated through the character changes throughout the novel. A plane crashes on an isolated, uninhabited island, and only children survived. The group of boys started their experience on the island very civilized. They voted Ralph into the position of leader, and he did his best in making decisions that would lead to their survival. However, with no adults or authority, a boy named Jack became savage as he gained a desire to kill. Slowly, a change toward savagery could be seen in all of the surviving boys’ lives. First Simon and then Piggy were killed by the vicious boys. Just before another life was taken, Ralph’s, the boys were rescued and brought back to reality and the civilized lifestyle they once knew. Despite what the boys had been taught as they grew up, the power and self-dependence placed upon the boys revealed the dark side that every human possesses.
