The most revolutionary event in the life of the company in its second decade was the advent of computers. HWI had used a card-punch system from the late 1950s for ordering. Members who wished to buy certain products during the gift toy market, for example, would pick up the appropriate cards and write in the number of their store, number of items and so on. These cards were collected and sent to an outside firm that sorted them and produced an IBM print-out from which orders would be filled and invoiced.
In 1964 the company installed its first true computer. It was an IBM 1401, a large machine that boasted three magnetic disks and 8K of memory. Although minuscule by present-day standards, this was an exciting level of capacity for handling data in its day. In order to implement the program, HWI hired Larry Fuller from the W.T. Grant Company, and he was assisted by Al Vicors of the IBM Corporation.
