A definition of aid is any flow of resources from MEDCs to LEDCs in the form of a financial grant, material gift or transfer of capital. There are various types of aid; some would appear more successful and useful than others. However, many thinkers would argue that aid is actually very inefficient, wasteful and imperialist which in many cases can lead to the dependency of LEDCs on the West. The statement can also be backed by both sides of the political spectrum with the left wing theories such as Dependency Theory arguing that it is imperialist and the New Right saying that aid is both inefficient and wasteful.
Many people view aid as being inefficient and this is backed up by evidence such as the fact that £300 billion worth of aid as been given to the developing world but overall in these countries, living standards have actually fallen. The Modernisation theory would argue that official aid is vital for industrialisation and this view was shared by the World Bank.
