Fiction Essay “An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge” The story “ An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge” is a very interesting story with a surprising twist. The author, Ambrose Bierce, uses many different techniques to show the reader that the escape sequence is nothing more than the last thoughts of a dying man. Bierce begins by using a very unique way of organizing this story and it creates a surprise ending that if written correctly wouldn’t have given the same effect. Then, Bierce goes on to tell the reader about the amazing, almost non-human events that occurred. Last, the author describes the intensity of Peyton Farquhar’s heightened physical senses throughout his journey home. Ambrose Bierce begins this story by using a very unique pattern of organization that leaves the reader with a surprise ending. The story was organized so that the rising action was introduced before the exposition, which is the background information.
