Why did a campaign for womens suffrage develop in the years after 1870?
During the course of this essay I am going to be discussing why and how women wanted and got the vote after 1870. I will be discussing their suffrage and various aspects of their campaign, along with some background of what their lives were like at that point in time.
Around the 1800s, women were seen as weak and fragile creatures, who had to be looked after and who were only interested in the pettiest matters. They were seen as the angels of the house, and it was their duty to look after their husband and children. Other than that, they were expected to look after the household and take care of all the familys wants and needs, and to attend church every Sunday. Most women were uneducated, and were brought up since birth to be a good wife and mother. Women were not encouraged to work, but rather to stay at home and take care of domestic problems. The church and the queen both supported this view.
