How should BSB and Sky Television have dealt with the potential competition prior to market entry? It shouldn’t have taken BSB by surprise that Sky Television was going to enter the market, given the attractiveness of the market (few channels, success in the US), Sky TV’s US TV satellite experience, its experience in the UK with newspapers, its history of making big bets, the fact that it had bid for it, the fact that it created a big hit in Europe with Satellite TV (even if losing money), and finally, just by knowing a little bit about Murdoch’s personality (aggressive, audacious, anti-establishment) and his ambitions to own global satellite. BSB should have done a thorough analysis of the competitive landscape and potential competitors early on, in order to devise strategies as to how to deal with them, before they enter and after they enter the market. Part of this analysis is predict what potential competitors, such as Murdoch, will do, and plan to preempt those actions and fight them.
