King Lear: Destruction of the Old Order Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

In Shakespeare’s play King Lear, the audience witnesses the destruction of the old order in a kingdom that was once great and powerful. The play begins when King Lear transfers all of his power on to his three daughters, Goneril, Lear’s oldest and most ruthless daughter who is married to the Duke of Albany. Regan Lear’s middle daughter who is arguably as ruthless as Goneril and married to the Duke of Cornwall. Then there is Cordelia, Lear’s youngest and favourite daughter until she is disowned by her father for not flattering him when asked. This forces Lear to divide his kingdom into two parts and give one part to Goneril and the other to Regan. Lear has already made several mistakes at this point in the play. He believes dividing his kingdom apart is the best way to go about things, but a kingdom is supposed to unite and get stronger, not divide and get weaker. Lear disowns the only daughter who actually cares for him and gives all of his power to his other two cold-blooded daughters.
