“The dreadful shape, which had sprung out upon him from the shadows of the fog. A hound it was, an enormous coal-black hound, but not such a hound as mortal eyes have ever seen.” Could this evil hound actually exist? Sherlock Holmes doesn’t believe so, but Dr. Mortimer believes it does in Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s The Hound of the Baskervilles. Dr. Mortimer, a family physician, comes to Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson with a case in which the two detectives attempt to solve whether the curse of the Baskerville family is real or not. The two detectives agree to take the case, constantly facing the differences between truth and fantasy. The contrast between the natural and the supernatural presents itself as the main theme of the novel. Showing what each of the characters feel about the hound of the Baskervilles and whether it exists or not, is a simple way of describing the theme of the novel.
