African American Matriarchy and the Tangle of Pathology Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

The disparity between blacks and whites in America is a tangled, complicated chasm to fully understand. The issues behind the cause of the disparity are multifaceted and there is not a general consensus on the root of the cause. The tangle of pathology to the root of the so-called demise of the African American family was explored by Daniel Moynihan, in the mid 1960’s in a report titled The Negro Family: The Case for National Action. The reactions to this document were diverse in agreement and discord. While some groups praised it as an accurate portrayal of the African American family, others including activist Angela Davis, argued against it, deeming it inaccurate. According to Moynihan, the “tangle of pathology” was the frailty of the African American family structure while Davis challenged his argument by focusing on the historical context of slavery, in which the majority of African Americans were socialized in America.
