What was the central point that sparked affirmative action? Racial discrimination. In 1896 a civil case Plessy vs. Ferguson, really showed racial discrimination towards people of a different race besides white. This case upheld segregation between white and black citizens and started the separate but equal doctrine. Thats why, Civil Rights was enacted in later years to help African Americans become full citizens of the United States with equal rights just like the white citizens. There were also segregation in public schools.
