This essay will argue that not all characters in Steinbecks Of mice of men were lonely, desperate, or cruel and will show that there are characters you can admire and like.
Curleys wife is very lonely, desperate and cruel. She is the only woman on the ranch and has no one to talk to. The ranch hands are afraid to speak to her because she could get them into trouble with Curley easily. Her dreams are to leave the farm and become an actress. She married Curley to get back at her mother and doesnt even love him. Also, she is cruel to Crooks by threatening to get him killed.
Crooks is the odd one out in the farm. He is the only black man on the ranch and the times he lives in racism is very common. Also, unlike every other ranch hand, he lives in a room by himself and he doesnt work with all the other workers out in the fields, he works in a barn alone. Crooks wants to be like everyone else on the ranch. To work with them, to sleep in the bunk house with them and to do the kind of things they do. He wants friends, to talk to and to be with. In the story Crooks sees his chan......
