Transition into adulthood
Have you ever felt confused because you were not sure who you were or what your supposed to be? Have you ever separated yourself from a group because you did not think you belonged there? J.D. Salinger illustrates the affects of transition into adulthood in the novel The Catcher in the Rye through the main character Holden Caulfield. Transition into adulthood or loss of innocence also leads into the life long damage of loneliness and alienation.
One obstacle that Holden Caulfield encounters is trouble with sexuality. Throughout the novel, Holden Caulfield fails at every mature attempt to emerge sexually with females, simply writing them off as sexual objects. At a bar Holden meets three girls from Seattle. He dances with them and tries to start a conversation but fails. Holden is trying to be grown and have mature conversations but is shot down by the star crazed women.
