According to Dr. Tina Benedictis, three to ten percent of females between ages fifteen to twenty-nine years old are starving themselves (Kassin, Saul). Five to 20 percent of people with anorexia will die from it. The word anorexia itself means lack of appetite. It is an eating disorder that is an intense drive for thinness and is centered around an obsessive fear of weight gain. It involves self-starvation and excessive weight loss (Benedictis, Tina et al.) You are anorexic if you are 85 percent or less than the average healthy weight which depends on your height and body fat percentage (Goldsmith, Toby et al). Anorexia is more common in females. Approximately 95% of people with anorexia are typically adolescent girls or women (Kassin, Saul). Anorexia nervosa is a chronic illness that affects a person both physically and mentally.
