Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is a mood disorder that is associated with depression episodes and related to seasonal variations of light. SAD was first noted in 1845 but was not officially named until the early 1980’s. As seasons change, there is a shift in our “biological internal clocks” or circadian rhythm, due partly to these changes in sunlight patterns. This can cause our biological clocks to be out of “step” with our daily schedules. The most difficult months for SAD sufferers are January and February, and younger persons and women are at higher risk. The symptoms of SAD usually recur during the winter session. Beginning between September and November and continuing until March or April; a diagnosis can be determined after 3 or more consecutive winters have the following symptoms: 1. Sleep problems – desire to oversleep and difficulty staying awake, in some cases, disturbed sleep and early morning wakening. 2. Lethargy – fatigue and inability to carry out normal routine. 3. Overeating – craving for carbohydrates and sweet......
