The Palaces of Minoan Crete reflects the architectural ability of the Minoans and helps archaeologists acknowledge, discover and learn about the society and culture, economic stability, warfare, religious practices and leisure activities of Minoan Crete. It is through the evidence found that scholars and archaeologists can see a strong relationship that the palaces held with Minoan religion. Many frescos, rooms, linear tablet inscriptions and remains of Minoan pottery, indicate that the palace was a sacred place for the Minoans and was a prime focus in the practices associated with Minoan religion.
Sir Arthur Evans, the discoverer and excavator of the Minoan palace of Knossos, was the first to ponder aspects of the Minoan religion. Based on a series of female figurines found at the site and an analogy with the cults of the ancient Near East, Evans hypothesized that the Minoans worshipped the Great Mother, a female goddess who embodied fertility, fertility of the earth, of the animal world and of humans.
