The Odyssey: Odysseus’ Cunning Abilities. The Odyssey by Homer is a story of human struggles. It is a story of a man and his struggles on his journey homeward. The man is Odysseus, and his struggles are unfortunate events that are of god and men creations. Odysseus overcomes his obstacles with his cunning abilities: deception, lying, and scheming. Odysseus lies to outwit the Cyclopes; he schemes to get his men out of Polyphemus’ cave alive. He deceives his servants to test their loyalty. Odysseus’ journey home to Ithaca is wrought with danger, and he overcomes danger with his cunning abilities. After leaving the land of the Lotus-eaters, Odysseus and his men comes upon the land of the Cyclopes, Polyphemus. This is the land where wheat, barley, and vines are flourished without cultivation. It is also the land that belongs to people that had no council or code of law; laws are made by the eldest male of the family. It belongs to the law-less, and aggressive Cyclops that dwells in cave.
