Hard Times - Charles Dickens Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

In what ways and how effectively, does Dickens represent the child as a victim of opposition in Victorian education between ‘the wisdom of the Head’ and ‘the wisdom of the Heart’ and how far in the novel is this tension resolved? This essay will discuss why the children within the novel Hard Times are perceived to be victims of the opposition between ‘the wisdom of the Head’ and ‘the wisdom the Heart’. These two opposites (which will now be referred to as the opposition between fact and fancy), will also discuss how this has manifested itself throughout the book. First to be determined, is the actual concept of fact versus fancy and what is meant by it? And why Dickens has chosen to debate the subject within the novel? Fact, is in fact a parodied view on Utilitarianism; the belief of ‘the greatest happiness of the greatest number.’ A philosophy popularised in the Victorian age by Bentham.
