Animal Farm - Use of Language to Distort Reality Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

The language used in Animal Farm is rich, witty, and full of sarcasm. This piece of work which is a political satire is portrayed successfully through the dialogues of the leaders of animal farm. Since it was Orwell’s intention to criticize Russia and the Soviet Union under the Communist party, dramatic irony is employed widely through Squealer’s dialogues. There are several ways in which language is manipulated to distort reality and control the animals. These include deceptions, semantic distortion, threats, alteration of language, visual imagery through language, and persuasive speech. There are many instances in which the leaders lie to distort reality. The windmill, for example, is passed as Napoleon’s “own creation” and that “he seemed to oppose the windmill simply as a manoeuvre to get rid of Snowball” who is said to be a “criminal”. Snowball’s expulsion is also based on Napoleon’s deception that he has allied with Jones.
