Bipolar disorder is the medical name for manic-depressive illness. It is a mood disorder that affects approximately1-2% of the adult population. Mostly prevalent in women.
The term Bipolar disorder, has gone through a few name changes. It was once called manic-depressive psychosis, also bipolar depression. The medical name changed to bipolar disorder, because bipolar depression is a self contradictory term.
Bipolar is characterized by two directly opposite opinions, natures, etc. Bipolar patients have mood swings from major depression to euphoria, which explains why is it not classified as Bipolar depression.
Some people may exhibit mixed symptoms of both mania and depression at the same time, others may have more moderate symptoms, which is defined as hypomania.
