Controversy 101: The Death Penalty The death penalty is an issue that has been a plaque of moral and ethical debate for centuries, as it always will be in years to come. When discussing the death penatly, the issue of retribution becoming vengence and deterrence becoming prevention often arises. Is execution the proper punishment for those who murder, or even rape? The question comes down to the individual, as everyone's opinion often differs. The views of van den Haag, Meilaender, Yoder, Spitz, and those portrayed in the film Dead Man Walking compare and contrast the different views expressed and attempt to show if the death penatly is favorable, but also if it is unjust and unfair. The goals of punishment are simple and straight forward. In no specific order, they are retribution, deterrence, rehabilitation, and prevention. Retibution is defined as something given or afflicted in such requital. The death penalty, for example in this case, is a form of retribution.
