Pleasure and Disquietude in Oedipus the King Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Sophocles’ Oedipus the King, a play consisting of emotional confusion, elicits two different kinds of emotions in the reader, yet the same feelings find reconciliation in context to the circumstances in which characters in the play find themselves. Sophocles’ ability to reconcile a reader’s moral principles through the use of dramatic irony allows him to draw out such a confusing response from the reader, and this makes Sophocles one of the greatest tragedians of all time. Oedipus attempts to bring two sides of human emotion together in a “healthy confusion” that results from the mixture between feelings of pleasure and feelings of disquietude. The union between these two polar ideas produces a unique cathartic effect with feelings of uneasiness mixed in, and thus the reader experiences a moral cleansing while simultaneously allowing feelings of disgust and revulsion to subtly complement those feelings of catharsis. Oedipus the King, therefore, allows a reader to experience a purification of the emotions that are brought about through the simultaneous evocation of intense fear ......
