“It’s Iago’s play not Othello’s” It is near impossible to determine exactly how Shakespeare wanted his plays to be understood, but the audience can get an accurate understanding from the evidence which is given throughout the play. A long argument revolving around Shakespeare’s, The Tragedy of Othello was whether the play belonged to truly Othello, or the main antagonist of the play, Iago. The Tragedy of Othello is about a Moor, who is the General in a Venetian Army. Othello is commended for his bravery and honour but is cursed with the tragic flaw of Jealousy. Iago, the antagonist, takes advantage of this flaw and sends Othello into a “jealousy so strong” that he ends up murdering his beloved Desdemona. Many, including myself, have come to believe that it is Iago’s play up to a certain turning point of the play, more specifically Act 4 Scene 1, where from then onwards the play belongs to Othello as Iago’s role is drastically decreased.
