The Americanization of Benjamin Franklin A case study essay An American – born scientist, politician and considered by some, militant for the rights of “Americans”, Benjamin Franklin is the ideal example to illustrate and define “American identity”. Franklin was born in Boston, Massachusetts in January of 1706, and soon proved to be a very “ambitious” youth with aspirations to become “a tolerable English Writer”. He had a bit of a rough start to this path he set for himself, becoming an apprentice in a printing shop. During his apprenticeship his thirst for knowledge was somewhat easier to quench, because of the presence of many books he read and absorbed very fast. Soon enough, young Franklin felt he could express the ideas he developed from his readings, and established his own newspaper “The New England Courant” in which he mostly satirized matters from Boston. At the age of sixteen he proved to be a tenacious and very smart writer. Not too long after venturing into Philadelphia, Franklin immigrates to England in 1724 at the age of eighteen.
