Looking at the Source: Understanding Immigration through Economics Mexico has the largest flow of citizens out of its borders than any other nation in the world, despite its relatively small population of 105 million. Statistics documenting the mass exodus of immigrants from Mexico, an overwhelming majority of them illegal, are mind-numbing. Over 1,600 people leave Mexico daily, most of them entering the United States. During the previous President of Mexico Vicente Fox’s term (2000-2006), over 3.2 million Mexicans left Mexico. That is an average of more than one-half million per year (Pickard). The author continues to communicate the fact that the majority of the immigrants “did not emigrate willingly, as if it were a matter of life styles, but out of the most basic of human needs, e.g. survival.” For the past 25 years, lending institutions like the World Bank and International Monetary Fund (IMF) and neoliberal economic policies such as NAFTA (North American Free Trade Agreement) have failed Mexico.
