Life in the United States revolves around machines. From automobiles, to dishwashers, to computers, most could not bear with out their precious commodities. Even the simplest tasks are replaced by computerized gadgetry, to further simplify our already relaxed lifestyles. However, less than one hundred years ago, people survived with only the simplest and most essential machinery. Times were changing quickly, as were technological advances, leaving the individual seeking greater self-worth. This theme pervades numerous pieces of American literature from the first half of the twentieth century. In particular, Death of a Salesman, by Arthur Miller, uses a number of symbols including common appliances, automobiles, and a newly developed recording apparatus to symbolize the individual’s decreased importance in a rapidly growing commercialized nation, where old-time values are no longer appreciated.
