Descartes Intention In Adopting The Method Of Doubt Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

What was DescartesÂ’ intention in adopting the Method of Doubt? Did he fulfill this intention? Descartes says that he wishes to examine those things, which he thinks to be true and set aside all those beliefs of which there might be some doubt. Descartes does not trust what he has "learned" through his senses. Because his senses have sometimes deceived him, and when one is on a quest for knowledge that entails being able to claim as knowledge only those things that are known with certainty, one must not rely on what has sometimes been the source of deception. The only way this condition could be circumvented is if you could give an account that precluded the possibility (and 'possibility' is the key word here) of further error. Note that the notion of being deceived by the senses is, strictly speaking, to reify the senses and attribute intentions to them. Descartes may well do this not because he literally believes the senses "do" this, but because the text is intended as an invitation to philosophy that is designed to appeal to those who have never previously engaged in......
