William S. Paley William S. Paley developed the CBS radio and television networks, and ran them for more than a half century. William took over a tiny failing network with only 16 affiliate stations and developed it into a world-class communications empire. William S. Paley came from an average size family. William was born on September 28, 1901 in Chicago Illinois. William and his family lived on Ogden Ave. in the Jewish ghetto on Chicago’s crowded west side. Williams’s neighbor hood was full of commerce. His father Samuel owned a small cigar shop. Sam was born in Brovary, a small town near Kiev in the Ukraine (Smith 28). Williams’s parents Samuel and Goldie arrived in Chicago in the late 1880’s (Smith 29). Samuel William’s father had six siblings. Sam had three brothers, William, Jacob, and Benjamin, and three sisters, Sophie Sarah, and Celia (Smith 29). Sam’s Father Isaac in 1888 took his family form Brovary and had them shipped on a four week transatlantic crossing to the United States, to escape religious persecution (Smith 28).
