The article that was chosen for review was written by Ken M. Cadigan and Roel Nusse. It was published on Dec. 17, 1997 in Genes and Development, Volume 11, Number 24, under the title of Wnt signaling: a common theme in animal development. The purpose of the study of the Wnt family of genes and proteins was to better understand the intriguing functions that this family allows. This family has recently become one of the developmentally important signaling molecules, with mutations the Wnt family showed remarkable phenotypical results with mice. Among the functions facilitated by the Wnt family are embryonic induction, the generation of cell polarity, and the specification of cell fate. The study is important because of the multitudes of Wnts each possibly playing a great multitude of roles in many developmental systems as well as in human diseases. This has drawn many more researchers to this field, resulting in a dramatic acceleration towards a complete understanding of Wnt signaling.
