A young man goes into a coffee shop in Amsterdam. He walks up to the counter, asks for a couple of samples, makes his decision and sits down with his purchase. But instead of taking a sip of hot coffee, he is rolling a marijuana joint. In Amsterdam, marijuana is a legal drug, whereas here in the United States marijuana is only legal in certain states, and only for medical use. The United States should take the Netherlands lead and decriminalize the use of medical and recreational use of marijuana. The marijuana plant is one of the safest therapeutically drugs and useful; it can be used to treat terminally ill patients, it has been found that in countries where marijuana has been legalized the use of drugs have gone down, and that marijuana has a potency equal to that of tobacco and alcohol. Marijuana should therefore be legalized.
