A contemporary audience would have found Henry IV part one relevant because the play about the safety of the kingdom in roughly 1403, would have mirrored what was actually happening at the time the play was written in the late 1590s, for many reasons. A major issue would have been Elizabeths childlessness. This meant no heir to the throne which would, most likely have resulted in rebellion and national insecurity; on the other hand, Henry IV did have a son, but because he was a usurper, he spent most of his time in power trying to secure his dynasty and hoping his son, prince Hal would mature and develop the necessary qualities to ensure the stability of the kingdom.
A second factor which is likely to have been relevant to a contemporary audience is Elizabeths need for favourites. Queen Elizabeth, who was on the throne when the play was written, had a number of favourites, such as Essex and Leicester, and soon became known as Richard II.
