The Epilepsy Foundation of America defines Epilepsy as a physical condition that occurs when there is a sudden, yet brief change in how the brain works. When the cells in a persons brain are not working properly a persons consciousness, movement, and or actions may be altered for a short period of time. These changes are called epileptic seizures. Sometimes it is referred to as a seizure disorder. Epilepsy unlike some other known medical problems does not pick a person based on sex, or race, Epilepsy affects people of all walks of life, whites, blacks, males, and females. I guess you could say it is an equal opportunity condition. It is possible for someone to experience a seizure and not have Epilepsy. For example a young child may suffer a seizure when they have a high fever. When this occurs it is called a febrile seizure. Other types of seizures not classified as epilepsy include those caused by an imbalance of body fluids or chemicals or by a withdrawal from alcohol or drugs.
