Race in Brazil Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Race in Brazil Beginning in 1500, Portuguese explorers set out to find an all water route to India. Instead they landed on a large land mass in the Americas, now known as Brazil. The riches of the land allowed the Portuguese to treat Brazil as just another trading post. When French and Spanish explorers began encroaching on Portuguese territory in Brazil, the crown reacted by setting up captaincies to encourage colonization. “These [land grants] were given to rich nobles, in [the] hope that they would exploit the Brazil wood and other resources, gaining personal profit while also serving the crown.” Not only did these land grants arrange economic profit for the elite, but it also set up a social structure in Brazil that would be based on the nature of the agricultural enterprise. The establishment of plantations allowed plantation owners [Portuguese elites] to secure laborers for agricultural production, to maintain economic growth, and to institute the planter’s conception as upper class and an authoritative role.
