Downfall of the American Dream
Peoples desire for fun and wealth during the 1920s led to the deterioration of the American dream. F. Scott Fitzgerald wanted to show this deterioration through his novel The Great Gatsby. In The Great Gatsby, Nick Carraway moves to West Egg, New York to work in the bond business. He has connections in both West and East Egg, where Gatsby and the Buchanan family live. In New York, he witnesses the different views of wealth, poverty, and the clash of the social ladder during the corruption of the American dream.
The American dream was a belief that through hard work, one could succeed in life and achieve prosperity. However, over time, this dream was warped into corruption. In the Great Gatsby, not only the rich, but the poor had a distorted view of the American dream. The inhabitants of West Egg were the newly rich, people who built up their wealth in a matter of a few years.
