Book Review: The Good Earth The story opens with the marriage of a poor peasant farmer, Wang Lung, to a young local slave named O-lan. After a short while, O-lan announces that she is pregnant. Through Wang Lung’s hard work, he grows a prosperous harvest and is able to put away some silver after witnessing the birth of his first baby boy. With the extra money, Wang Lung decides to buy some land at the House of Hwang, where O-lan used to live and work. O-lan gives birth to another boy, and because his harvest is still good, he can afford to put aside more silver. News of his wealth catches the attention of Wang Lung’s greedy uncle, who comes to the home asking for money. Traditions hold that one must respect their elders, particularly one’s relatives, so Wang Lung reluctantly shares part of his money with the uncle. O-lan’s next child is a girl. A terrible famine strikes and Wang Lung decides they need to move south for the winter.
