Imagine being mentally suffocated. Because the government felt that thinking freely was not good for the public, they limited a persons civil rights. Transcendentalism is in existence today to prevent us from injustice towards our self. According to Merriam-Webster Online, transcendentalism is a literary and philosophical movement asserting the existence of an ideal spiritual reality that transcends the empirical and scientific intuition. Thoreaus firm beliefs of transcendentalism lead to one of the greatest movements in written history. Drummond from Inherit the Wind once said, If the law is of such a nature that it requires you to be an agent of injustice to another, then I say, break the law (Lawrence and Lee, Inherit the Wind). Thoreaus philosophy of government and justice has much to do with Drummonds quote.
