A blur of indistinct faces, white sterile walls, and knowing there is more to life than street sweeping is Equality’s world. Ayn Rand’s novel Anthem screams individualism and uniqueness. This tale is of a dark age when the thought “I” is a sin and preference is condoned. An age of communal obedience and being stripped of all identity you could ever possess. Equality, the protagonist, struggles to oppress the damned thought of “I” and to live for his brothers. Individualism, the theme of the book, is portrayed through the growing of Equality As time progresses his indiscretions become more serious, driving him more towards individualism than ever before. Equality learns early on he is different. Physically he is taller but mentally he strives for more. He wants to learn more. Here he discovers his first major indiscretion which is the sin of preference. He wants to be a scholar, but is instead declared a street sweeper. Although a disappointed, he dutifully does his job.
