Andrew Carnegie was one of the most successful entrepreneurs in American history. His rise to the top was an embodiment of the American dream; he was born a peasant and through hard work, became a king. Carnegies notion of success evolved from usefulness and honor, grew to money and power, and finally finished with philanthropy and patronage. He started out simply wanting to have a decent job, with decent wages. Later on in his life, his priorities changed. His goal was to make as much money as possible with doing the least amount of actual labor necessary. Finally, as an older man, he strove to give back to the society that had help make his success a reality. Carnegies changing view of success is significant because it illustrates how anyone can use their experiences and lessons they learn in life to ultimately achieve a worthwhile contribution to humanity.
