Heyward and Robertson Paper Heyward and Robertson portray South Carolina in very different ways. They show the changing attitude of southerners, and how they saw their home. In Robertson’s book Red Hills and Cotton we see life in the up country. The story focuses on Robertson’s family or kin, his friends, and the community that they develop on their farm. Heyward’s book Porgy tells the story of a poor cripple beggar living in a city of duality. Part of the city is filled with beautiful things, and beautiful people. The other parts of the city are filled with the ugly things of life, drugs, criminals, and poverty. Both of these books do have some common ground. Like the portrayal of, race relations, and how South Carolina would look at itself in the aftermath of the civil war. Each book portrays a different area of South Carolina. Ben Robertson gives us a view of South Carolina from upcountry. It is portrayed as the land of hard working farmers, and overall good people.
