Great Expectations: Coming of Age Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Pip’s coming of age is the central theme of Great Expectations. It is exemplified throughout the novel as the main character slowly learns the importance of compassion and understanding for others. He comes to the realization that Estella really does have a heart, accepts Magwitch as his benefactor, and discovers that Joe, a commoner, is in fact more of a gentleman than he. As the book unfolds, Pip is transformed from an ignorant and snobbish young boy to a wise and thoughtful adult. Throughout the novel, Pip is always confronting his love towards Estella. At one point in the story, Herbert asks him he could detach his lover for her and declines immediately, saying that it would be an impossible task. However, even though his passionate love proceeds, questions if Estella indeed did have a heart, due to her frequent malicious remarks towards him. “He calls the knaves, Jacks, this boy!" said Estella with disdain, before our first game was out.
