Drug abuse has long been a social problem in the North America which has been increasing dramatically the past 20 years. So for one to work as a substance abuse counselor they must first take the necessary steps that they need to work with cliental from such diverse backgrounds. In this paper I will discuss the steps necessary for one to become a culturally competent counselor, plus the joys and challenges faced working with such a diverse cliental.
Every person uses different drugs for different reasons which can vary from substance to substance, person to person or from occasion to occasion. Some individuals may start using drugs for reasons such as curiosity, pleasure, social pressures, or for medical but may continue using for a totally different reason. Although there are many individuals who use substances recreationally, the populations that will be focused on are those individuals who have developed a deep rooted dependency.
