Racism in Burmese Days Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Racism is an integral part of the plot in “Burmese Days”, and it is the main foundation for what the story becomes. In the very early part of the book, the racism is introduced through a club for whites only. The thought of even integrating the club is a ridiculous idea to all club members, other than Flory. “Little pot-bellied niggers breathing garlic in your face over the bridge-table. Christ, to think of it! We’ve got to hang together and put our foot down on this at once.” This quotation is one of the first remarks about the idea of integration; furthermore, it shows the utter disgust the club members have for anyone a color other than white. This quote is also foreshadowing in the aspect that these people will do whatever it takes to keep the club segregated, and that begins with the plan to keep Dr. Veraswami out by any means necessary. The racism does not only exist in Burma; it appears in the character Elizabeth as well. She is an English woman whom travels to Burma for hope of a husband, yet is one of the most racist characters in the novel. “But they have such hid......
