All Quiet on the Western Front - Symbolism & Characteristics of Paul Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

All Quiet on the Western Front is the story of a young German soldier, Paul Baumer who tries to survive through the First World War. This Paul Baumer is a very distinguishable character. Paul is a sympathetic young man. He displayed this after killing the French man in no man’s land. He examined the fallen soldier and saw how very similar they were to each other. Paul commented that if you were to get rid of the weapons they were holding, the two of them could have been brothers. He mentioned that the leaders of this war would not have wanted them to know this. Paul felt bad that he killed his “brother”. This was a turning point for Paul; it was one of the experiences that made him think about the uselessness of this war. Paul is a loyal individual. He demonstrated this by signing up for the war. When his teacher, Mr. Kantorek, told all the students that it was their duty to join the army Paul went and enlisted with all his friends. He did what was best for Germany even if it meant putting his life at risk. Paul was devoted to his country and would have done anything......
