Ashley Reefer October 5, 2006 Mr. Smith A Daughter of Han . The Confucian religion or philosophy has been around for an overwhelming 2,000 years and is still widely practiced today. According to the religion people are born naturally inclined to be virtuous, but need education and good examples set by their superiors to stay that way. Confucius emphasized benevolence, respect for superiors, filial loyalty, right relations, and a number of other attributes as the formula for achieving the “great harmony”. Generally, Confucianism reflects the practical view of the Chinese world. The greatest blessing in life is the enjoyment of living life. This includes the pleasures of good food, producing children, and attaining ripe old age surrounded by one’s family ( Murphey 43). In A Daughter of Han, the life and hardships of Ning Lao T’ai-t’ai, a Chinese working woman are depicted, and her strong Confucian beliefs are illustrated.
