Today, colleges are becoming more competitive due to society’s growing belief that success and happiness start with the foundation of a good education. Many people feel a person’s level of education can even measure his success later in life. In many cases these theories are proven correct when well-educated people become successful. Ruth McBride, a main character in the book The Color of Water clearly believes and depicts this theory. She too feels that education brings success and very badly wants a good education for her children. The two predominant factors that contribute to Ruth’s behaviors towards her children’s education were her present and her past. There were also other important life teachings that Ruth felt education could give her children. Perhaps the most valuable result of all education is the ability to make yourself do the thing you have to do when it ought to be done, whether you like it or not; it is the first lesson that ought to be learned; and however early a man's training begins, it is probably the last lesson that he learns thoroughly (Thomas Huxley). ......
